How To Get Away With Murder: Season 3, Episode 10: We’re Bad People comes across as a bit scatterbrained but is not without its strengths when it focuses on the predicament of its primary protagonist.
With Wes (Alfred Enoch) dead, Laurel (Karla Souza) still recovering, and Connor (Jack Falahee) and Oliver (Conrad Ricamora) attempting to get over each other, there is a lot on our heroes’ (if you can call them such) plates. And while last night’s episode handles each subplot with varying levels of success, one gets the impression that its efforts might have been better spent on exploring just two or even three storylines in depth. Yes, I know it’s How To Get Away With Murder, one of the most convoluted but nevertheless engaging shows on TV at the moment, but still, it wouldn’t hurt for the producers to highlight the “engaging” part of the equation instead of the “convoluted” part.
Supporting this argument is the fact that the plot given the most attention – that is Annalise’s (Viola Davis) imprisonment as she awaits her bail hearing – is the one that holds up the best. As she waits in a cell with two women who appear to be quite used to the discomfort and squalor of jail, it becomes very clear that Annalise is deeply disturbed and eager to get out as soon as possible. This makes the court’s denial of her bail all the more powerful, as she is forced to return to the conditions that she not only wanted to escape but keep others from facing. Indeed, How to Get Away With Murder would be well-advised to continue exploring Annalise from this perspective, and I certainly hope they do.
