Star Trek: Discovery Will You Take My Hand? Review
Star Trek: Discovery: Season 1, Episode 15: Will You Take My Hand? This Star Trek: Discovery Will You Take My Hand? review holds that the show’s first season doesn’t go out with a bang but it can’t be said to go out with a whimper either.
In a way, it could be said that it’s a conclusion that is very much in keeping with the spirit and ethos of Trek as a whole. How many times have we been told that Trek is about diplomacy and resolving differences peacefully rather than action and violence (or, depending on whether the plot dictates it, minimal, justifiable use of violence), after all? But while it may make for an orthodox interpretation of the property’s humanistic philosophy, it also makes for an ending that works but not much else.
It’s little surprise that the Terran Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) would turn out to be untrustworthy, but the pace at which she enacts her treachery is simply too fast. Most viewers probably could tell something was rotten when Admiral Cornwell (Jayne Brooks) appointed her captain of the Discovery, but I doubt many expected that the source of the stench would be revealed so quickly. I get that the season only had 15 episodes to establish and resolve such a plot, but this should have made the producers think twice about introducing a storyline they wouldn’t be able to do justice with the time constraints they had. Perhaps it would have worked better for Season 2.
I will say, however, that it was very nice to see the Orions again. Although they loom large in the imagination of Trekkers, they figure very little into the actual source material, so it’s cool that the writers were able to find a place for them in the story. It will be interesting to see if the show decides to revisit them and flesh out their society and culture further.
Which, brings us to the other tie to The Original Series. Encountering none other than Captain Pike of the USS Enterprise, the Discovery treads closer to TOS‘s territory than it ever has before. What are the ramifications of this for existing Trek canon? Will the Discovery adopt the classic red, yellow, and blue shirts of TOS? Why do the Klingons still have ridges when they clearly didn’t around the time of TOS? It’ll be up to the second season of Star Trek: Discovery to answer these and other questions.
