The Blacklist The Architect (No. 107) Review
The Blacklist: Season 4, Episode 14: The Architect (No. 107) features potentially-compelling guest stars but is unable to leverage them into anything memorable or meaningful.
When it was revealed that Brent Spiner would play the titular Architect, this reviewer was excited about getting to see the veteran actor not only the small screen once again but as noteworthy as show as The Blacklist. Having played the eternally curious android Data for seven years (as well as his villainous doppelganger Lore) on Star Trek: The Next Generation, he has more than proved his ability to deliver quirky, captivating performances. But despite the prominent billing Spiner’s character revealed, he actually does relatively little in the scenes he is in. In fact, he doesn’t even get much in the way of words in the episode, with him saying no more than a single sentence in his initial appearance. One can’t help but wonder if the baffling decision to have him killed off-screen was made because the writers got bored of their Blacklister and opted to dispose of him in the most convenient way possible.
Spiner is far from the only guest to receive inadequate attention. Brian Stokes Mitchell has a surprise role as a colleague of Red (James Spader) who has the misfortune of having the Concierge of Crime come calling on him and Melora Hardin returns to her role as Isabella Stone of the previous episode, but neither is given the time or development to make their storylines truly compelling. Let’s just hope that next week’s show learns from these mistakes and makes sure to give guests of The Blacklist the treatment they deserve.
