The Blacklist Miles McGrath (No. 65) Review
The Blacklist: Season 4, Episode 3: Miles McGrath (No. 65) delights as a standalone episode as much as it does a part of the program’s overarching plot.
Little of this has to do with last night’s Blacklister however. Although the concept of a number-crunching risk analyst who funds crimes rather than commits them is interesting and surprisingly unique after everything we’ve seen so far in the series, Miles McGrath (Tate Ellington) doesn’t do enough in the episode to leave a lasting mark on viewers’ imaginations. Compared to the imposing Vincent (Lukas Hassel) and the feisty Halbeck (Manny Perez), the scrawny “criminal incubator” appears out of his element, and as we see when he finally crosses paths with Red (James Spader), he absolutely is.
Fortunately, the story itself is exciting enough to make up for the underwhelming antagonist. Watching Tom (Ryan Eggold) go undercover and bluff his way onto Halbeck’s team is bound to leave even the most seasoned Blacklist fan teetering on the edge of their seat, particularly when the mercenary sics one of his goons on him to see how tough he is. The same goes even for a set-up as domestic as Tom and Liz (Megan Boone) going to a law firm to request information regarding Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen). When their request is denied, Liz quickly cooks up a scheme to lure the employee with the documents in question away from his office long enough for her take pictures of them before departing the office and leaving them none the wiser.
And then there’s the question of Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert). Unceremoniously left for dead at the end of the last episode, Red’s former confidante somehow managed to cling on to life long enough for an unknown party to find and retrieve her. One might assume that this is Kirk or an agent of his, but that seems like far too easy an assumption make. Perhaps if we’re lucky, the identity of this mysterious party will be revealed in next week’s episode of The Blacklist.
