The Blacklist The Lindquist Concern Review
The Blacklist: Season 4, Episode 5: The Lindquist Concern accomplishes that perfect balance between exploring the show’s mythology and telling an engaging Blacklister of the week story that is missing from even the show’s best recent episodes.
In marked contrast to last week’s lackluster villain, Thursday’s show featured an intriguing antagonist who was more than capably brought to life by the actor portraying him. Although the name Silas Gouldberry (Adam Godley) might not exactly inspire fear in the hearts of viewers, Godley flawlessly conveys a sense of menace as he lures unsuspecting inventors into signing away the rights to their contraptions before poisoning them with tainted wine. But he’s not the only guest star to turn in a quality performance: Lilli Stein does a fantastic job as the young, awkward inventress who is all too eager to believe Gouldberry’s claims that he can get her plans for an alternative source of power for cars off the ground, getting us to care enough about her during the modest amount of time she appears on-screen to worry when the show leaves her fate unknown.
As was previously alluded to, however, the episode’s mythology element was just as compelling as the main plot involving Gouldberry. While Red (James Spader) leads his men in pursuit of Alexander Kirk (Ulrich Thomsen) and Agnes, Dembe (Hisham Tawfiq) is unable to forgive himself for not warning Mr. Kaplan (Susan Blommaert) that Red was planning to kill her, a sentiment that he makes abundantly clear to his boss. Like Aram (Amir Arison) blowing up on Samar (Mozhan Marno) in last week’s show, it’s incredible to see somebody as taciturn as Dembe express serious disagreement – however politely – with those close to him. If this season of The Blacklist keeps it up, it seems like it will be one of the most eventful for the show’s supporting characters.
