TV Review: The Pillars of the Earth: Season 1, Ep.5: Legacy

The Pillars of the EarthEpisode 5 – entitled Legacy – has aired and may be the best episode of the mini-series so far. The previous episode was a cliffhanger, with Jack Jackson (Eddie Redmayne) and Prior Philip (Matthew Macfadyen) on the precipice of death. It was well orchestrated but how they found salvation did not quite live up to it. There are many modification to the The Pillars of the Earth from its book incarnation, many floating within this episode, some good, others of dubious quality. I will say this: the changes keep everyone guessing, whether you have read the book or not. The fire at the fair was handled much better in the book but how Tom Builder (Rufus Sewell) was killed was handled with some artistic liberty and flare in Legacy. William using the butt of his sword as a bludgeoning weapon was good. Tom moving William aside to see the cathedral one last time was a great addition that author Ken Follett must have been happy with.
