VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS (2017): Luc Besson to Direct Adaptation of French Comic Valerian and Laureline

Luc Besson to Adapt Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets to the Big Screen. French director Luc Besson is already lined up for his next project, an adaptation of the French comic book series Valerian and Laureline called Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.

Besson posted on his Twitter feed that he will be writing and directing the comic book adaptation. The Lucy director also revealed that Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne will be playing main characters Valerian and Laureline. Besson’s wife Vriginie Silla will produce the film under their production company EuropaCorp. Production for the film is set to begin at the end of the year with a slated release for summer 2017. The film will also be on IMAX, according to the director’s Twitter page. The film’s title comes from the second volume in the Valerian and Laureline series called “The Empire of a Thousand Planets”.

Released in 1967, Valerian was created by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mezieres and sold over 10 million copies in 21 languages worldwide. The plot follows two space companions exploring the planet of Syrte, holding a system of a thousand worlds. Their mission is to find out whether the planet’s inhabitants could pose a threat to Earth. What these two explorers discover is a decaying empire led by corrupted nobles, it’s citizens starting a revolution, and a mysterious group of marked wise men who are pulling the strings behind hidden fortresses. Based on their findings, the two explorers from Earth must choose a side.
