NBC Rebooting Comic Book Adaptation of Witchblade
The power of the bracelet is about to be unleashed again as NBC is rebooting Witchblade, a comic book series by Top Cow. The new version has gotten a script order from the network with the pilot bring written by The Vampire Diaries showrunner Caroline Dries.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new superhero drama will have both Caroline Dries and CSI producer Carol Mendelsohn working on the show as executive producers. The comic book series focused on homicide detective Sara Pezzini, on the hunt for a serial killer in the streets of San Francisco – until a bracelet she has worn her whole life gives her supernatural powers in a crime she tries to solve. Her bracelet is known as the Witchblade, an amulet that has been worn by women throughout history, with Sara as the next wearer.
The comic book series was original adapted into a made-for-TV film before being made into short-lived TV series on TNT, which ran from 2001 to 2002 for two seasons before getting cancelled. The series starred Yancy Butler as detective Sara Pezzini.
NBC hasn’t been lucky when it came to comic book shows. Their last series Constantine was cancelled after just one season while their Heroes revival ended up getting low ratings. The network is trying the genre again as they are about to debut their DC Comics comedy Powerless in February. With their crime fantasy series Grimm about to end this year, bringing back Witchblade might be a good replacement to fill in the gap on Fridays.
