X-MEN: Fox Closer to Deal to Develop Live Action Television Series

Fox Near Deal to Make a Live Action X-Men TV Series. It was a while ago since we last heard about the development of a live action TV series based on the X-Men. It looks like they may be moving ahead with the project, but only if Marvel gives them the green light to do so.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel still owns the comic book rights to the mutant franchise, so it will be up to them to decide whether Fox make the TV show or not. “[For] X-Men, we’re in negotiations with Marvel. We’re hopeful we’ll be able to announce something soon. We’re not closed on a deal yet but it’s something we’re definitely pursuing,” Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour.

Despite owning the movie rights to X-Men, Fox still has to wait on Marvel to give the go-ahead since they can’t use characters from Marvel’s other series like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or Agent Carter. “The characters from the X-Men franchise are with Fox on the feature side so we won’t be including Marvel characters that are at ABC with Disney,” Walden said. “This will be exclusively the franchise as it has existed at Fox.”

As expected, Marvel still holds the cards regarding the future of the X-Men franchise.

The show will be written by Star Trek 3’s Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, while Evan Katz and Manny Coto will be serving as showrunners for the potential series. The whole idea for an X-Men TV show is to have it as a long-running series, according to Walden.
