Simon Kinberg reveals the next X-Men film will take place in the 1990’s. The franchise producer said that the movie will pick up ten years after X-Men: Apocalypse leaves off.
Serving as a prequel series to the X-Men trilogy released in the 2000’s, the new films have been set in decades prior to the events of the original movies. X-Men: First Class was set in the 1960’s, X-Men: Days of Future Past took place in the 1970’s, and the story of X-Men: Apocalypse happens during the 1980’s. It appears that the next installment of the series will continue this narrative tradition, as Kingberg confirmed.
Kinberg did not say, however, if he was referring to the planned New Mutants film from director Josh Boone or a brand new entry in the main series, although the identity of the project he was speaking about will likely be confirmed in the next few days:
The X-Men comics saw a commercial boom during the 1990s following the character redesigns by Jim Lee, which went on to be the basis for the fan-favorite animated series and some of which are still being used today.
The upcoming New Mutants film is set to feature a new roster of super-powered teens, including Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock with a previous report pointing toward Alexandra Shipp‘s Storm (who makes her debut in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse) and James McAvoy’s Professor Charles Xavier playing major roles in the film as well.
