Zootopia Documentary. Walt Disney Animation Studios‘ Zootopia (2016) movie featurette entitled ‘Imagining Zootopia’ has been released by Fusion. Byron Howard, one of three directors of Zootopia (the other two being Rich Moore and Jared Bush) talked in the documentary about the sub-text of the film and mentioned how he worked on the film for almost five years. From what I have heard, that dedication, from Howard and the rest of the crew behind the film, shows on-screen.
Howard illuminated the viewer on some facts about Disney that they might not have known, one instance being: Zootopia is Disney’s fifty-fifth animated feature film. Howard went to describe the world of Zootopia to the viewer so that they could put into context the story elements that are on display in later segments of the Imagining Zootopia documentary.
The viewers are taken to the Disney vault where stills from all the Disney films are kept, all the way back to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s first animated film.
If you have watched the special features for UP, you have seen the research trips that Disney sends its animators on. For Zootopia, it was no different, though this time they went to Africa.
I had no idea how many separate teams worked on an animated film for Disney. There are almost ten teams that make passes over their films, layering it, choosing camera angles (literally putting a camera POV into animated shots and viewing that shot from that new angle). The craftsmanship is extraordinary.
