Gotham Nominations Include Some Big Surprises
John Turturro was among those performers who were nominated for a 2026 Gotham Award today as the announcement was made for the first big awards race of the season.
This year’s Gotham nominations were full of big surprises. Mother Mary, a widely predicted nominee, was completely snubbed in all of the major categories. The 11 films that were, indeed, nominated for the Best Feature were Clarissa, Club Kid, The Invite, The Debut, Dreams in Nightmares, Josephine, Mouse. Paper Tiger, Primetime, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, and Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.
The Best International Feature nominees were All of a Sudden, Ben’Imana, Blue Heron, Everytime, Fatherland, Filipiñana, La Gradiva, Minotaur, Possible Love and Tender Loving Care.
You Can See Everything led the nominees for Best Documentary, which included NAZA. Brilliant filmmakers who are in the running for Best Director include Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma‘s Jane Schoenbrun and Tender Loving Care‘s Mike Leigh.
Jordan Firstman was nominated for Best Breakthrough Director for his work on Club Kid. However, Firstman was snubbed for his wonderful performance in the very appealing Club Kid. Martin McDonagh received a deserved Best Original Screenplay nod for Wild Horse Nine. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack are currently the front runners to win Best Adapted Screenplay for their work on The Invite.
These were the nominees for Best (Outstanding) Lead Performance: Mahershala Ali, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Gillian Anderson, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Jeon Do-yeon, Possible Love, John Early, Maddie’s Secret, John Malkovich, Wild Horse Nine, Ian McKellen, The Christophers, Julianne Moore, The Debut, Sophie Okonedo, Clarissa, Andrew Scott, Elsinore and John Turturro, The Only Living Pickpocket in New York. Julianne Moore or John Malkovich will most likely take this award home. There’s smart money on Moore for the eventual win.
The Outstanding Supporting Performance nominees were: Tom Courtenay, Queen at Sea, Esmé Creed-Miles, Sense and Sensibility, Penélope Cruz, The Invite, Adam Driver, Paper Tiger, Andrew Garfield, Artificial, Skyler Gisondo, Primetime, Sandra Hüller, Fatherland, Kate O’Flynn, Tender Loving Care, Tao Okamoto, All of a Sudden and Channing Tatum, Josephine. This award should be O’Flynn’s to win although Tao Okamoto isn’t far behind her in the tracking polls.
The Gotham Audience Award category featured some of the biggest artistic disappointments of the year (Obsession, Michael, The Drama) and some of the best movies of the year (The Invite, Backrooms, Project Hail Mary and You Can See Everything). La Bola Negra, which will be reviewed by FilmBook this weekend, was the other movie in that category.
While some truly great films did make the cut, the most inspiring nomination for many may be in the performance categories: John Turturro’s inclusion in the Best (Outstanding) Lead Performer category felt like a great accomplishment for the terrific Turturro. Kate O’Flynn’s inclusion in the Supporting Performer category most likely put a smile on many faces when her name was announced as well. She has a real shot at winning.
Some seemingly big snubs besides Mother Mary were Rose, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) and Tom Cruise (Digger). Primetime and You Can See Everything alongside probable Best Picture Oscar nominee, The Invite, were three of A24’s biggest scores at today’s Gotham nomination announcements.
It must be said that these nominations don’t always equal what will definitively happen at the Oscars, but they’re the stepping stone to other major awards ceremonies for 2026 movies. Let the awards season begin!
