ARTIFICIAL (2026): Luca Guadagnino's AI-Driven Film Will Compete as a Comedy at the Golden Globes

Artificial Set to Compete in the Comedy Category at the Globes

Luca Guadagnino‘s highly anticipated new film, Artificial, has been entered into the Golden Globes race as a comedy in a surprising move that was just recently announced.

It has just been revealed that the new Luca Guadagnino AI movie, Artificial, will compete in the competitive musical/comedy category at the Golden Globes. While it doesn’t matter much to Andrew Garfield, who is being pushed for Best Supporting Actor for the film in an unseparated cagtegory, the film now has a different group of opponents in the Best Picture race than it would have had if it had completed for Best Motion Picture (Drama), where The Odyssey is hugely predicted to win.

This new picture from Guadagnino focuses on Garfield’s Sam Altman, who is the head (CEO) of OpenAI. This film is positioning its other star, Yura Borisov, for Best Actor (Comedy) for his portrayal of OpenAI co-founder, Ilya Sutskever.

Artificial could have gone either way as it is both a comedy and a drama. Since its unveiling at the New York Film Festival, it has stirred up some considerable buzz, earning respect from early audiences and critics. In fact, the film currently stands at a great 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This film is on the longer end of Guadagnino’s films, clocking in at 2 hours and 20 minutes in length.

Some critics deemed the film, which is being distributed by Neon, “scary,” which makes its inclusion in the comedy category somewhat questionable, but then again, the terrifying gorefest film, Obsession, will be competing against it in the very same category. Other top contenders in that comedy category include Wild Horse Nine, The Invite and The Debut, and it is likely Artificial will make the final cut for Best Picture (Comedy) amongst those other aforementioned films.

Best Picture (Drama) is a three-way race between Dune: Part Three, The Odyssey and La bola negra. Also in the running for a Globe nod for Artificial is Monica Barbaro (One Night Only), who portrays Mira Murati in Guadagnino’s new picture. She will compete in the mixed Best Supporting Actress category, where she stands a good chance of getting one of the currently open wild card nomination spots.

Artificial is the type of the movie that speaks volumes about the world of business and with its hot topic of artificial intelligence at the center of it, the movie is sure to be a major awards contender. A lot of the appeal of the film to make decent money at the box-office will depend on its wide opening night CinemaScore grade. It is currently projected to earn a “B,” which would make it a moderately successful film from a financial standpoint if the word of mouth ran off of that grade. New York Film Festival audiences were mostly positive about the picture, and the film had its world premiere there.
