Joss Whedon Chosen to Direct Batgirl Solo Film

Joss Whedon is about to make a transition from Marvel to DC, as The Avengers director has been picked to direct a solo Batgirl movie for Warner Bros. It is certainly a surprise to many fans of Joss Whedon as he is prepping for his next jab at the superhero film genre.

According to Variety, it’s been reported that Josh Whedon has been chosen to helm a solo feature based on Batgirl. The film is expected to be a part of the growing DC Extended Universe. Other than directing the film, Whedon will also be writing and producing the project. With this news, it will be a return for Whedon in film since directing Avengers: Age of Ultron. The report also mentioned that the idea for the movie was envisioned within the last month. For now, we don’t know whether the character will make her appearance in either The Batman or Gotham City Sirens.

In the past, Whedon said he always wanted to make a female-led superhero film, naming characters like Black Widow and even Wonder Woman at one point. The director also wanted to do a female-driven Avengers film but neither of those ideas was made. With Batgirl, this will be DC’s second solo film with a female lead after Wonder Woman, so it appears that Whedon may finally get his request granted.

No other producers were announced for the film, but we can expect Toby Emmerich, Jon Berg, and Geoff Johns of DC Entertainment to be involved. Batgirl enters a long line of other superhero films in development like Nightwing, Shazam, The Flash, and Black Adam.
