Danai Gurira Discusses Black Panther’s Importance
Black Panther has made headlines for becoming the first major superhero movie besides Blade to feature a black lead while also being set in Africa. It’s a big departure from other superhero films that we’ve seen, and actress Danai Gurira sees the significance for being part of a film like this.
Danai Gurira, best known to audiences as Michonne on The Walking Dead, was cast to play Okoye, the head of the Dora Milaje. The actress recently spoke with Entertainment Tonight on how special this was to her for being a part of Black Panther. “I grew up seeing a lot of superheroes and they didn’t look like me and they certainly weren’t in Africa,” The Walking Dead star told ET. “I think that it is something great for girls who are like me growing up. Growing up in Africa, we were looking for images we couldn’t always find.”
Gurira also added the importance of continuing to make films like this. “I want to see stories coming from the black female perspective. We’re at a far better moment than we were at in the past, but there’s a lot of work to be done.” We shall see how the response to Black Panther will be and whether this will pave way to these types of films.
