Black Panther Director Says Shuri Has Similarities to Tony Stark
Black Panther is taking the industry by storm after releasing the first teaser trailer with its luscious setting and the overall cast. Among the cast is Letitia Wright, who plays the tech-savvy sister of Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa named Shuri, who is compared to Tony Stark in some ways.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler spoke about Letitia Wright’s character and how important she’ll be in the film. Explaining that she is more than just a Wakandan warrior, she’s also a bright scientist. He said, “Wright’s Princess Shuri character is not only a fighter but a brilliant scientist, on par with Iron Man’s Tony Stark, Coogler says. She has spent her life researching and experimenting with Vibranium, and these twin blasters are just one of her devices.”
Coogler’s description of the character is also similar to what the actress said on her character. Letitia mentioned Shuri’s fascination with technology and her brilliant mind, saying that she will serve as a role model to many young women. In a conversation with Interview Magazine, she said:
She’s princess of Wakanda, but also she designs all of the new technology there. She has an innovative spirit and an innovative mind, and she wants to take Wakanda to a new place. Also, she has a great fashion sense, better than mine. She’s so vibrant, a beautiful spirit, but also so focused on what she does. And that’s good for other people to see, especially for young people to see, because it’s like, ‘Look, there’s a young black girl who loves technology and she’s from Africa.’ It’s something refreshing.
