Christian Bale will play Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s long-anticipated film. For about 15 years now, Michael Mann has been determined to make a movie based on the life of the Ferrari car founder, Enzo Ferrari. Based on the biographical book Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races by Brock Yates, he was supposed to direct it alongside Sydney Pollack before he passed away (in that film, the role of Enzo was originally assigned to Al Pacino). Michael Mann even signed on for another Ferrari movie called Go Like Hell, which would have told the story of Ferrari’s rivalry with Henry Ford II.
Christian Bale previously worked with Mann for the 2009 film Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp.
What is interesting to note is that this is not be the only Ferrari film in the works. There have been reports that another one is in development with Robert de Niro to star in the film.
Although no release date has been announced or a time when filming will begin, Mann already has a script. He cobbled together two versions of the same script: one that was originally written by The Italian Job’s Troy Kennedy and the other was a complete rewrite by the late David Rayfiel. Last year, when the CEO of Cecchi Groi Pictures Niels Juul was asked about the project, he said, “It’s a beautiful tale of the story of Ferrari battling with Maserati for supremacy in speed, yet it’s not a racing movie: It’s a ‘Godfather’ movie with racing in it”.
