Saoirse Ronan to Follow Oscar Snub with Literary Adaptation
Saoirse Ronan is slated to star opposite Austin Butler in an A24 film adaptation of Holly Brickley‘s debut novel, Deep Cuts.
Kirkus Reviews has hailed Holly Brickley’s new novel, Deep Cuts, as a “promising debut.” A24 hasn’t wasted any time casting a film adaptation set to be directed by Sean Durkin (The Iron Claw). Ironically enough, both of the stars set to appear in Deep Cuts were just recently snubbed for Oscar nominations for their new performances. They are: Saoirse Ronan (The Outrun) and Austin Butler (Dune: Part Two). Still, these are two big stars and Hollywood couldn’t be more excited about the latest partnership between A24 and Durkin who have worked together in the past with the critically acclaimed Zac Efron starrer, The Iron Claw.
Deep Cuts is set in the 2000’s and deals with a couple in their 20’s who are obsessed with music. Ronan will also be co-producing this ambitious project. Josh Safdie is also among the producers who will help bring this project to the screen. Brickley’s book which is the source material for the new movie has just come out and is sure to make her a household name as an author.
Austin Butler was brilliant playing Elvis Presley in Butler’s Oscar-nominated role in 2022’s masterpiece, Elvis. Butler also wowed viewers playing a vicious baddie in Dune: Part Two for which he was unfairly snubbed for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nod. Ronan is a perfect match for Butler and she has been nominated multiple times for Oscars for some of the brilliant roles she has played in the past. Ladybird, her collaboration with Barbie helmer, Greta Gerwig, is perhaps, Ronan’s biggest claim to fame thus far.
Though Butler and Ronan were snubbed this year, that doesn’t mean that this new project can’t yield at least one of these high-profile stars another Oscar nod. Ronan was a two-time loser this year as she also starred in Blitz. Many believe her roles in Blitz and The Outrun cancelled each other out which left her without a nomination. Some folks have said the same thing about Butler who was also in The Bikeriders as well as Dune: Part Two in 2024. Perhaps, his fine work in both films also cancelled each other out and left him empty handed come the time of the Oscar nomination announcements.
Deep Cuts, as a film, promises many a great soundtrack to complement the announced leading star-power and directing muscle that has been assigned to the A24 film adaptation of the sure-to-be-popular book. A24 needs a hit after the disappointing box-office returns of Babygirl and Sing Sing which were Oscar bait movies that failed to live up to expectations though Babygirl was a bigger hit than Sing Sing by far.
