Ghost in the Shell First Five Minutes Clips
The first five minutes, the water fight, deep dive, and the awakening scene for the Ghost in the Shell (2017) adaptation have debuted. The first five minute clip was interesting scene, tweaked from what we have seen in the released trailers and movie TV commercials for the film. I liked the Predator light-bending cloak that Major (Scarlett Johansson) uses and the way that she used it.
The scene was also more violent than I was expecting but the limitations of a PG-13 rating were evident.
The look and the film of the people in the scene wee authentic but the slow lead-in to the Major was unfortunate. It looked artificial and blu-screeny. The film did not need that. We did not need to see a CGI vista. Watch the beginning of Blade Runner and you will see what a realistic, gritty future city landscape scene looks like (and that was almost thirty years ago).
The water fight introduced something curious. The cyborg body of the Major seems to hit hard, extremely hard. If she were hitting her opponents that hard, hard enough to make her opponent fly backward or to do a somersault, won’t her opponents’ ribs and jaw be visibly broken? It doesn’t really make sense. Is this because the film has a PG-13 rating and its producers decided to do something visual instead of realistic?
The awakening clip features the Major waking up in her new body and having the situation explained to her. What I, as the viewer, wanted to see (and hopefully its in the film) was the fatally damaged human body of the Major and all that happened before the awakening moment.
The deep dive scene was tense and a very clever way of introducing some of the water diving scene from the original Ghost in the Shell film.
