Leonardo DiCaprio Disappointed by Co-Star’s Oscar Snub
Leonardo DiCaprio seemed disappointed that his co-star, Chase Infiniti, did not receive an Academy Award nomination for her work in One Battle After Another.
While Leonardo DiCaprio received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, the actress who played his daughter in the film, One Battle After Another, Chase Infiniti, was snubbed by the Oscar nods, failing to receive the expected recognition she deserved. Earlier this week, an article was posted on this site stating that she was a victim of category misplacement. She was pushed for Best Actress by the film’s studio, Warner Bros., even though she had a mere 35-minutes or so of total screen time in a movie that ran well over 2 and a half hours. Some could say that the issue was purely categorical although DiCaprio, while ignoring that issue, went on to claim she was “the heart and soul” of the (Oscar-nominated) film.
DiCaprio called Infiniti the “fabric” of the movie and continued to add that there would be no film without the work she brought to the picture. While sticking to the fact she was snubbed in the category she was promoted in, there are forces of work here that led to her performance not being nominated. One of those factors was that Infiniti’s role should have certainly been deemed a supporting one for awards consideration reasons.
Last year, Emilia Pérez ruined everything in terms of proper category placement. Karla Sofía Gascón was nominated for Best Actress even though the winner for Best Supporting Actress in that same film, Zoe Saldaña, had more screen time. It led to debates and it seems Oscar voters had enough of the confusion. Chase Infiniti would probably be sweeping the Best Supporting Actress awards category in every way if she was placed there. However, now, Teyana Taylor who had much less screen time than Infiniti is being touted as the probable winner of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar as Taylor has already won a Golden Globe in that category.
DiCaprio’s nomination was a bit of a surprise considering the competition with actors like Joel Edgerton (Train Dreams), George Clooney (Jay Kelly) and Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) in the running as well, but DiCaprio is well-established in Hollywood. This is, in fact, his 8th nod from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Infiniti has definitely been seen and admired by the Academy for her work in the DiCaprio movie, but sadly won’t receive an Oscar award nomination for her wonderful performance in it.
Like Infiniti, other victims of category misplacement this year who were snubbed at the Academy Awards nominations announcement are Ariana Grande (for Wicked: For Good) and Paul Mescal (for Hamnet). In the past, actors like Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) won top Oscars in leading categories for supporting performances, but it seems the Academy may be putting their foot down in terms of who gets in the leading acting categories these days and in the immediate future. Amy Madigan (Weapons) is predicted to win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar if Teyana Taylor loses.
