Lionsgate Looking to Develop The Monolith into a Film. The comic book series The Monolith is making a giant leap to the big screen as Lionsgate has picked up the film rights with plans to adapt in into a motion picture. This marks the first for Lionsgate to adapt a comic book series.
The Hollywood Reporter first gave word of the news that Lionsgate would be working on adapting The Monolith into a film. Deadpool’s creative director Dave Wilson will be directing the project from a script by Barnett Brettler. The Monolith would be Wilson’s directorial debut. Erwin Stoff from 13 Hours and Brunt will be producing the film.
Created by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, The Monolith follows Alice Cohen, a recovering junkie who inherits a house in Brooklyn from her dead grandmother. Alice stumbled upon her grandmother’s diary and reads about a tale of lost love and revenge that began in the factories of New York during The Great Depression. The story also involves the creation of a monster that is bent on revenge for the murder of an honest man. The 12-issue series was published by DC Comics from 2004 to 2005. Ever since it’s publication ended, the rights have gone back to Palmiotti and Gray.
