Inde Navarrette to Get Best Actress Push
Inde Navarrette of the hit film, Obsession, is going to be getting a Best Actress campaign push from the film’s distributor, Focus Features.
Obsession was a monster hit in theaters, grossing over half a billion dollars at the box-office worldwide. Inde Navarrette, the film’s lead actress, was the most impressive thing to most audiences about the movie, which divided people when it played in theaters this past spring. $263 million is nothing to sneeze at, and that was the film’s domestic box-office total. Now, the studio, Focus Features, is set to launch a campaign for Navarrette, the film’s director, Curry Barker, and many of the picture’s team members who worked in front of the camera and behind the scenes.
Next Best Picture declared there were no Oscar chances for Obsession when they reviewed it last year. Yours truly over here at FilmBook didn’t like the movie, but it’s quietly sneaking up as the movie with the most Oscar prospects for Best Actress, so far this year. Of course, Anne Hathaway was great in A24’s Mother Mary, but that film grossed next to nothing when compared to Obsession. A24’s campaign for Hathaway just got railroaded by Focus Feature’s inclusion of Inde Navarrette in the Best Actress line-up for potential nominee candidates.
There’s still a whole slew of awards season movies coming, so don’t clear off the mantelpiece for Inde quite yet. There’s some validity in Next Best Picture‘s initial uncertainty about Obsession‘s Academy Award potential. Indeed, Navarrette has some major scenes in the film, so it’s easy to see her becoming a nominee now that the film is such a big hit worldwide. If it bombed, there’d be no chance in hell for her to get in, but with the success of the picture, a nomination could actually happen.
What does Focus’s campaign for Academy Awards really mean in the grand scheme of things? It basically says that the studio wants to translate those box-office grosses into Oscar nominations for a film that would never have had this potential had people not lined up to see it in droves.
Obsession is about a one-wish willow that grants a man’s wish for his girlfriend (Navarrette) to love him, but she becomes obsessed with him and possessed past the point of no return, which leads to an over-the-top bloodbath of an ending that is unsatisfying to some, but perfectly acceptable to others.
Though the smart money is on Navarrette to secure a nod right now, I think they’ll be five more impressive performances than Navarrette’s was coming out later in 2026’s Oscar-bait motion pictures, but if there isn’t, she could well find her way up to the stage and speaking at the podium at the Oscars. No word yet on whether the film, itself, will be campaigned for Best Motion Picture Drama or Comedy (or Musical) at the Golden Globes.
