Darren Aronofsky’s Name Has Been Mentioned in Talks to Direct Cujo
Acclaimed Black Swan filmmaker Darren Aronofsky‘s name has been revealed in several articles in correlation to the possibility of him directing the new Cujo remake for Netflix.
Cujo from 1983 was a tense, nerve-wracking horror film that didn’t quite achieve the heights of movies like Jaws in terms of receiving Oscar nominations but, now, with the news of the possible involvement of director Darren Aronofsky to helm the remake of Cujo, the possibilities are endless for the upcoming project.
Darren Aronofsky is an actor’s director but also a true director’s director as well. His stars have received countless accolades, including a Best Actor Academy Award trophy for Brendan Fraser (The Whale), a Best Actress Academy Award trophy for Natalie Portman (Black Swan), and a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler). Whoever stars in Cujo, if it is actually directed by Aronofsky, could well receive a nod for Best Actress if she’s anywhere near as good as Dee Wallace was in the original 1983 Cujo.
Why is Aronofsky’s name associated with this upcoming Netflix film becoming such a big deal? Well, he was Academy Award nominated for Best Director for 2010’s Black Swan, a terrifying masterpiece for which Portman won her Oscar. Black Swan was a layered horror/drama that was truly character-driven and pinpointed Aronofsky’s tremendous talents as a master of suspense. While we don’t know what, specifically, he could do to improve Cujo, the idea of him behind the director’s chair makes me think this could be the best thing to happen to Stephen King adaptations since the brilliant The Green Mile came out in 1999. That was over a quarter of a century back.
Aronofsky is also known for Requiem for a Dream for which he got his big start in terms of the filmmaker being truly noticed in Hollywood. That movie was also a tense tale with the kind of horrific elements embodied in the story of Cujo which revolves around a dog who gets bit by a bat and gets rabies. This dog, a St. Bernard, ends up terrorizing a woman and her son in a car which becomes a true battle of survival that will have viewers on the edge of their seats throughout.
While nobody is sure that Aronofsky has actually signed on quite yet to the Netflix project, the news of his name “circling around” is huge news to anyone with appreciation for horror movies and great cinema. A remake of a Stephen King adaptation wouldn’t be as big a deal as this if the Oscar-nominated Aronofsky’s name was not being thrown around. Even though Cujo was great the first time around, it could easily be done as a run-of-the-mill horror film in the wrong hands. If Aronofsky signs on, the new Cujo will be anything but ordinary.
