Disney Pixar’s New Short Film ‘Out’ Features Studios First Gay Main Character

On Friday, Disney+ released a new ‘SparkShorts’ short film ‘Out’ on their streaming platform, which features the studios first lead gay character in a film.

On May 21st, Disney+ announced on Twitter, the Friday release of the short, as well as released a short trailer for the 9 minute film.

The story follows a man named Greg who has yet to come out to his parents about his sexuality and is extremely nervous about doing so, all while in the process of packing and moving in with his boyfriend, Manuel. Greg’s parents show up for a visit which causes Greg major anxiety because he’s extremely afraid to come out to them. However, with a little magical help and a out of body experience as he switches places with his pet dog, he is encouraged to tell his parents the truth.

The story not only tells the heartwarming tale of the fears of coming out to your parents, but it also encourages people that your true self isn’t something you should keep hidden, especially from those who love you. The short film is the first release from Pixar to feature a gay main character but also the first animated gay main character for Disney. It was written and directed by Finding Nemo’s Steven Clay Hunter, this film marking his directorial debut. Disney had often been criticized in the past for their lack of LGBTQ Representation but after the release of Out, have been receiving nothing but praise.
