Mark L. Smith has been hired to write the screenplay for Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek film. When news of an R-rated Star Trek film first broke, it seemed like the stuff of fantasy i.e. it would never happen in a million years.
The writers’ room for the new Star Trek was a good approach, in regard to Tarantino’s interest in the franchise, but it had the air of fan propaganda at best. The wisps of those assumptions are now gone. The Revenant was a beautiful film, thanks in no small part to its director, actors, and its script. The latter was written by Mark L. Smith. Smith approach to the material in The Revenant was uncompromising, never sighing away visceral or sexual violence when it positively served the narrative of the film.
His work on The Revenant earned him the attention of many producers and movie productions, people looking for a craftman for their story ideas in need of tested hand and steady voice.
One such production was the aforementioned Quentin Tarantino / Star Trek project. The competition in the writing room, which also contained Lindsey Beer, Drew Pearce, and Megan Amram, must have been fierce but the prospect of writing a film that Quentin Tarantino deemed worthy to shoot was too attractive a prospect for any screenwriter in Hollywood to ignore.
The first rebooted Star Trek film, released in 2009, made over $385.6 million worldwide at the box office. The second film in that franchise, Star Trek Into Darkness, released in 2013, made over $467.3 million worldwide. The third film in the franchise, Star Trek Beyond, released in 2016, made over $343.3 million worldwide.
No matter how good Tarantino’s Star Trek film is when it is released, I how it is the pleasant surprise that Star Trek: Discovery has turned out to be.
