Disney+ to Debut ‘The One and Only Ivan’ Instead of Releasing in Theaters

Disney has decided to debut their new animal adventure film ‘The One and Only Ivan’ via their Disney+ streaming service instead of releasing it in theaters.

The One and Only Ivan is a new mixed live-action and CGI film based on the children’s novel of the same name, which was written by K.A. Applegate. The book has won several awards since it’s release in 2012. It tells a story from the perspective of a 400-pound silverback gorilla by the name of Ivan (voiced by Sam Rockwell), who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant (voiced by Angelina Jolie) and Bob the Dog (voiced by Danny DeVito). Ivan has very few distant memories of life in the jungle, where he was captured when he was much younger. However, when a new baby elephant, Ruby (voiced by Brooklyn Prince) arrives, having been separated by her own family in the wild, it touches Ivan and he begins to question his own life and worth. This inspirational story about true friendship will be directed by Me Before You’s Thea Sharrock and penned by School of Rock’s Mike White.

On the premiere date of ‘Artemis Fowl’ on their streaming service, Disney announced that ‘The One and Only Ivan’ will debut on Disney+ on August 21.
