Warner Bros. considering Akira trilogy with Christopher Nolan attached. Akira is just one of those movie remakes that you keep hearing about that never seems to get off the ground. Even since the idea was brought up in 2002 to remake Katsuhiro Otomo’s classic manga and animated feature, tons of people were, at one point, attached to it like: Keanu Reeves, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jaume Collet-Serra, Kristen Stewart, etc. Even with that false-start history, Warner Bros. is not giving up on the project just yet.
Sources say that Warner Bros. is planning to make a trilogy of Otomo’s work and there is a chance that Christopher Nolan could be attached to the project. There is no word on whether that means he would come on-board as a director, writer, or as a producer.
What makes this story interesting is that Warner Bros. recently signed Nolan to make another movie that is scheduled for a 2017 summer release with no other information about that film. I’m not a speculative fellow but if the sources are correct that Warner Bros. is still keen on making another Akira film, that film might become a reality much sooner than expected. Not only that, but its producers could do what Peter Jackson did with his The Hobbit movies and expand the story into three films. For now, this is only speculation, but it is a sign (possibly) that what is considered one of the greatest Japanese animated films could be getting a live-action counterpart after all.
