Neill Blomkamp‘s Firebase (2017) short film stars Steve Boyle, Nic Rhind, Robert Hobba, Chris William Martin, and Carlo Yu.

Neill Blomkamp is moving full steam ahead with Oats Studios and its short film. The first short film released through Oats Studio was Rakka, an excellent short film. The next is Firebase.

This short film was pretty innovative. My one problem with Firebase was that it was too short. Right when the film had gotten infinitely interesting, when a climatic clash (with the relativity castle suit) was about to occur, the short film ended.

Firebase was not as good of a short film as Rakka but it had multiple moments.

The SGT. Car (Robert Hobbs) segment of the Firebase was the best part of the short film. SGT. Car’s story about the River God (Carlo Yu) was good, especially Car’s appearance, going back in time, then not only coming back to present again but bringing something from the past with him. In SGT. Car’s sad case, what he brought back was fire.

SGT. Hines (Steve Boyle)’s segments of Firebase was the second best aspect of the short film. There was a lot to be explored with that character, like his headaches, sensing the River God, etc. but like other aspects of this short film, they went unexplored.

The way Firebase ended was frustrating. The short film Curve ended in ambiguity but that ending was satisfying in its own way. With Firebase, it was like someone hit the pause button or funding ran just as things were getting really good.

Firebase also stars Tyler Johnston, Masttroianni, Than Thao Nguyen, Nicole Goliath, and Richard Simpson.
