HELLMOUTH (2015) Clip & Poster: A Blending of Old & New Horror

Hellmouth Clip

Hellmouth Clip and Poster. Stephen McHattie‘s Hellmouth (2015) movie clip (1min and 29sec) and poster have been released.

This clip immediately reminds of the innovative way that Robert Rodriguez blended live-action with animated CG backdrops. Not only is it efficient and cost-effective to work this way, but in both cases it creates a surreal, dreamlike effect that lets the viewer know they’re in for a stylized genre movie. The rules of this film may not be the same as they are for others.

In this case, Stephen McHattie has seemingly created a very interesting palette and sense of immersion. I’m sold, on the visuals, at least. I want to explore more of this world, drive around more and see other parts of town. This strongly reminds me of the style of old Under The Killing Moon point-and-click detective games, or even the Blade Runner PC game.

Check out the clip and see for yourself what I mean. It’s not long, and not particularly scary, but gives you a sense of what I’m talking about.

Besides the clip, there’s a beautiful poster in the vein of recent horror films that really lean into their genre (see the The House of The Devil poster, for instance). I love these posters, and hope the film deserves on as easy on the eyes as this.

According to Bloody-Disgusting, regarding the inspiration and attitude that went into making this film,

I wanted to create a story-driven film with fantasy and horror combined. Something that was directly inspired by the era of Hitchcock and even Ed Wood,” said director John Geddes last year. “Working with a writer like Tony Burgess was a pleasure as we both love the simplicity in many of the old classic films of the 50’s and 60’s, and even earlier in films like Nosferatu and Faust. We worked really hard to make Hellmouth something fresh.

Hellmouth is now on iTunes and On Demand, so check it out and report back in the comments section!

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
