The first movie trailer for The Current War (2017) from The Weinstein Company.

The Current War plot summary from Imdb:

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Thomas Edison and Michael Shannon as George Westinghouse, THE CURRENT WAR is the epic story of the cutthroat competition between the greatest inventors of the industrial age over whose electrical system would power the new century. Backed by J.P. Morgan, Edison dazzles the world by lighting Manhattan. But Westinghouse, aided by Nikola Tesla, has seen fatal flaws in Edison’s direct current design. Igniting a war of currents, Westinghouse and Tesla bet everything on risky and dangerous alternating current.

With it’s story about two men locked in a bitter struggle against the backdrop of the 19th century, it’s hard not to think of The Prestige when watching the trailer for The Current War. In fact, an early scene showing a field of lightbulbs slowly coming alight is very much reminiscent of a similar scene in the Christopher Nolan thriller, and Tesla (Nicholas Hoult) himself briefly appears at the end of the promo.  Also featuring promising performances from Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon, it looks like a major contender for an Oscar or two.

Alfonso Gomez-Rejon‘s The Current War (2017) stars Katherine WaterstonTom Holland, Benedict Cumberbatch, Nicholas Hoult, Michael Shannon, Tuppence Middleton, Matthew Macfadyen, Damien Molony, Tom Bell, Conor MacNeill, Celyn Jones, Abigail Johns, Ekow Quartey, Tom Sweet, and Iain McKee.
