Bruce Campbell Discusses Ash vs. Evil Dead. It has been a little over a month since the announcement of the Ash vs. Evil Dead series on Starz and now fans are finally getting some insight into the show straight from the mouth of star of the series, Bruce Campbell. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Campbell opened up about what it’s like returning to his most iconic role as well as what the series has in store for audiences.

Best known for its finely tuned balance between horror and comedy, there are a number of roads for the Evil Dead television series to go down in terms of tone. When asked what type of approach the series would take Campbell had this to say,

“There’s jokey horror and horror-horror. When there’s a presence in the room, it has to be dealt with because it’s an extremely dangerous and volatile situation. Humor may come out of it, but there’s nothing funny about a demon ripping somebody’s head off. And the beauty of Starz is there’s no content issues. Let’s face it: Fans want the carnage and the mayhem. So we intend to give them quite the explosion of viscera. Most of it directed at me, unfortunately.”

Campbell also discussed the importance of having Director Sam Raimi back onboard the project.

“Mostly we had to get Sam. That was the bottom line. I wouldn’t take it seriously if they didn’t get Sam, and neither would the fans. So we’re on the right road. And any other incoming directors would be apprenticing under his style and method. Like Fargo the TV show—there are rules about how you shoot that show, about how it’s supposed to look. So in our case, once they learn the system, the Evil Dead way, we can really have a blast with it.”

Fans have been clamouring for the return of Ash Williams since 1993’s Army Of Darkness. I am most looking forward to seeing how well a character of so few words translates to the long form story-telling structure of television. Will Ash immediately display more depth and become fully fleshed out or will his act grow tiresome by episode 3?
