CARTEL LAND (2015) Movie Trailer: Kathryn Bigelow Tackles Drug Cartels

Cartel Land Trailer. The Kathryn Bigelow produced documentary, Matthew Heineman‘s Cartel Land trailer stars a cast of real Mexican and American heroes fighting against the violence perpetrated on innocent people along the Mexican-American border. Cartel Land‘s plot synopsis: “A classic western set in the 21st century, pitting vigilantes on both sides of the border against the vicious Mexican drug cartels. With unprecedented access, this character-driven film provokes deep questions about lawlessness, the breakdown of order, and whether it is just for citizens to take up arms to fight violence with violence.”

This seems to be the latest defining documentary on the complete cluster-fuck that is the drug war. The societies we have created in our neighbors’ front yards are almost apocalyptic in their danger and hopelessness. There are innocent people caught in the middle, people trying to uphold order getting their heads cut off, and entire villages being terrorized by groups of armed militia. This is what happens when you create a delineation between legal and illegal, when that imaginary demarcation contains a very real profit margin of millions. This trailer also presents the fear of everyone involved. After all, we are all just human, and even cartel members are trying to survive and feed their families. This documentary seems to portray that microcosm – warring tribes, all wanting the same thing, torn by the security of money and murdered by their neighbors – in a manner that sheds light on the bigger picture, of what we are doing on a global scale. I can’t wait to watch this. It looks like high-reality in an ultra-effective dose, rapidly fired into your brain.
