Film Review: YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER YOUR MOTHER (2026): Bassam Tariq’s Masterful Action Film Boasts a Great Mahershala Ali Performance

Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother Review
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother (2026) Film Review, a movie written and directed by Bassam Tariq and starring Mahershala Ali, John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Adia, Jahleel Kamara, Tiffany Boone, Tramell Tillman, John Henry Ward, Alyssa Gihee Kim, Ashley P. Jones, Aaron Goodson, Irene Santiago, Nettie Kraft, Merav Ellis and Shawn Jain.
Filmmaker Bassam Tariq’s brilliant action picture, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, boasts a terrific turn by the excellent Mahershala Ali, who gives a relentless performance that is among his best work to date. In the picture, Ali portrays Latif, a Muslim father of three children. Those kids end up losing their mother at the starting point of the plot in this very intense new picture. This movie is full of sharply observed action scenes that are nerve-wracking to behold, and Ali is the glue that holds it all together through his fierce and powerful performance.
As the film opens, Latif is a hitman who is doing a job in a bathroom that he has been assigned to do by a heavy local named Mike (Laith Nakli). Latif sloppily kills a man and is later asked to take out a religious fanatic called Pastor Hwan (John Cho). Hwan targets a porn operation that is co-led by Hatty (Abubakr Ali). Thus, Latif is asked to do another hit; one that would pay extremely well, but one that Latif does not wish to partake in.
Latif is dealing with the bigger picture of the fact that his tiny baby is unable to adapt to baby formula after having been breast fed by the mom. Latif has to try to get breast milk, but he needs a doctor’s prescription to get it. A girl who has worked for Hatty, Fugazi (Tiffany Boone), has been able to accommodate the baby’s needs through breast-feeding, but Latif must find another way to keep his child fed.
Meanwhile, Latif’s other children, Fatiha (Adia) and Qadir (Jahleel Kamara), are concerned with their dad’s emotional state. Fatiha, especially, grows alarmed by her dad’s actions with thoughts of her and her brother losing their dad too hard to fathom.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother is an effectively edited film that brings back memories of great Tony Scott action pictures. There are close ups and medium shots that drive the action and the plot is full of violent action sequences that are over-the-top, but tell this story extremely well.
John Cho does some of his best work to date in this film. As Pastor Hwan, Cho brings wicked unpredictability to his character and it’s almost impossible to know which way the Pastor will turn next, especially in the closing sequences where Latif shows up to extract vengeance on the Pastor. All bets are off in the exciting climax of this powerful and tightly made picture and the fight that ensues at the end will keep you hooked.
Tariq is an extraordinarily talented filmmaker. This movie has elements of religion interwoven with some extremely violent circumstances that intensify the action significantly. Perhaps, Tariq’s most impressive accomplishment is obtaining such a strong performance from Ali, who takes this role by the horns and doesn’t let go from the first frame of the movie all the way through until the last.
Ali has been in some great films, but there’s something very brave about playing a father who is down-on-his-luck and taking illegal measures to try to provide for his family. Ali’s character walks a fine line between doing what is just and doing things he shouldn’t be doing in order to keep his family together. It’s a masterclass in acting by Ali, who keeps the audience invested in his character even when he resorts to methods that are certainly untraditional, to say the least, in order to keep a roof over his kids’ heads.
One scene has Ali’s character make his son get out of the car to pray when the son demands that it is the right time for prayer. This is a well-conceived moment in a film that rarely takes the time out of its agenda for scenes that aren’t action-packed.
It is certainly an extraordinary turn by Adia as the daughter that drives the character Ali plays in the movie. Adia is exceptional, capturing the confusion and heartbreak of the daughter who loves her dad unconditionally and cannot imagine the idea of him leaving her world so soon after her mother has passed away. Adia is perfect in this role, capturing a wide range of emotions. In a smaller role, an unrecognizable Giancarlo Esposito gets some moments to shine as well.
Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother turns out to be heading towards an action-packed ending that will certainly surprise viewers with its unpredictable final revelations. This film never truly takes a moment to breathe, and if it does, those seconds go by really quickly. While the return from those rare quiet moments in the picture to the formidable main action in the storyline is heavy-handed at times, it is still a skillfully constructed film. This film is necessarily violent in order to bring together the ideas of vengeance, family and salvation impeccably. This is one of Ali’s very best movies.
