South by Southwest Film Festival 2020 Available on Amazon Prime Video

Though the physical 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival has been cancelled due to the outbreak of Coronavirus (Covid-19), SXSW Film Festival has partnered with Amazon Prime Video to bring part of this year’s presentation to film audiences.

The endeavor has been entitled “Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection.”

Director of Film at SXSW Janet Pierson had this to say about the collaboration:

“Ever since SXSW was canceled by the City of Austin, we’ve been focused on how we could help the incredible films and filmmakers in the SXSW 2020 Film Festival lineup. We were delighted when Amazon Prime Video offered to host an online film festival, and jumped at the opportunity to connect their audiences to our filmmakers. We’re inspired by the adaptability and resilience of the film community as it searches for creative solutions in this unprecedented crisis.”

This partnership will bring some of the films that would have screened at the 2020 SXSW Film Festival to United States users of Amazon for a ten day time period. Potential viewers do not have to be a Amazon Prime member to partake in this one-time experience. 2020 SXSW Film Festival films will be available in front of the Amazon Prime Video payment barrier that stops non-paying members from viewing Amazon Prime Video content.

The only thing that SXSW and Amazon require is that you have a basic Amazon account, which is free to anyone.

The 2020 SXSW Film Festival filmmakers have all been invited to take part in Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection but it requires an opt-in by them – they have to agree to screen their films to the masses for free. In addition, Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection will not be free to participating filmmakers. Filmmakers will be charged a fee to stream this films over Amazon’s streaming service for the ten day time period of Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection.

The launch date for Prime Video presents the SXSW 2020 Film Festival Collection has not been set yet but all those involved are hoping for late April 2020.
