The Last of Us TV Series is Coming to HBO

A The Last of Us video game adaptation has been green-lit by HBO. The horror / apocalypse TV series will be created by Chernobyl creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin. Druckmann will write the screenplays for The Last of Us TV show. The TV series will be executive produced by Naughty Dog President Evan Wells, Naughty Dog is the video game company that created The Last of Us, along with Carolyn Strauss, Druckmann, and Mazin.

The Last of Us TV series will be based on the events of the original video game and potentially its unreleased sequel (May 29, 2020), entitled The Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us‘ video game plot synopsis: “the story takes place twenty years after modern civilization has been destroyed. Joel, a hardened survivor, is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they both must traverse across the U.S. and depend on each other for survival.”

The Game’s Acclaim

Upon release, [The Last of Us] received critical acclaim, with praise directed at its narrative, gameplay, visuals, sound design, characterization, and depiction of female characters. The Last of Us became one of the best-selling video games of all time, selling over 1.3 million units in its first week and 17 million by April 2018. The game won year-end accolades, including multiple Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications, critics, and game award ceremonies, and is considered one of the greatest video games ever made.

Thoughts

This has been a long time in the coming. They have been talking about a The Last of Us film adaptation for years, with Maisie Williams taking on the lead female role. Maisie might have aged out of the role now, since the character in question is a 14-year-old and Maisie is now twenty-two-years-old. Since they upped the ages of the children in Game of Thrones, they will probably do that for The Last of Us just to bring Maisie’s star-power and familiar face to the TV series. In addition, HBO knows what its going to get from Maisie, acting-wise, since she worked for them for eight years.

I purchased The Last of Us last Christmas but I have not played it yet. This news will probably spur me to play through a little of it this weekend.
