NYCC 2019 The Walking Dead Season 10 and New Series Panel

AMC‘s The Walking Dead panel at 2019 New York Comic Con, featuring Angela Kang, Scott Kimball, Robert Kirkman, Dave Alpert, Norman Reedus, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Danai Gurira, Josh McDermitt, Seth Gilliam, Ross Marquand, Lauren Cohan, Matthew Negrete, Aliyah Royale, Alexa Mansour, Nicolas Cantu, Hal Cumpston, Annet Mahendru, and Nico Tortorella. The Walking Dead producers and cast discussed what’s ahead in the show’s 10th season and introduced the third TV series of the TWD universe.

The Walking Dead fans received exciting news today, ahead of tomorrow’s premiere of the show’s 10th season. At a New York Comic Con panel, fans were treated to a first look at episode 1, which depicts the characters in walker-fighting formation, each one having the chance to showcase their unique combat talents. It’s a re-introduction to beloved characters, with little in the way of new plot developments as of yet. Interestingly, though, the clip begins with the image of a satellite in space. According to executive producer Angela Kang, this image was inspired by the consideration of what else is happening in an apocalyptic world that hasn’t been shown onscreen.

The idea of what’s taking place in other parts of The Walking Dead‘s universe was very much at the forefront on this panel. Most notably, an as yet unnamed third TWD universe series was announced, accompanied by a trailer and a discussion with the new show’s cast and crew. This show takes place in the midwest, we’re told, and it follows a group of teenagers who have grown up in this apocalyptic world. The teenagers have been protected from walkers for their entire lives and they embark on an adventure that suddenly brings them face-to-face with what they’ve always been sheltered from. The show’s cast and crew could share very little, although Nico Tortorella shared that he joined the project because of his interest in playing an openly LGBTQ character in this universe where, according to the creators, the only binary is between dead and alive.

Speaking of dead and alive, both panelists and fans received a shock when former cast member Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie Greene, showed up on stage to reveal that she will finally be returning to the show. It was also confirmed that The Walking Dead will have a season 11. And, according to Scott Kimball, fans should stay on the lookout for movie news and other expansions of this universe.

Perhaps the biggest cheer of the entire panel went to Danai Gurira, who portrays Michonne. Season 10 was Gurira’s last, and she received a standing ovation from her cast-mates onstage for her work. In discussing her character, Gurira said, “She’s stronger than me, she’s smarter than me, she’s probably a better lover than me…the beauty of her journey has taught me a lot about actualizing as a woman.” Gurira shared that leaving the show has been difficult, but that it has been a deeply important part of her life. In fact, she was far from the only cast member to call TWD a family.
