21 JUMP STREET 2 (2014): Phil Lord and Chris Miller Directing Sequel

Channing Tatum Jonah Hil 21 Jump Street

Phil Lord and Chris Miller Directing 21 Jump Street Two. The selection of Phil Lord and Chris Miller for 21 Jump Street 2 (2014) answers the question of who will be directing the follow-up film. Phil Lord and Chris Miller directed the first 21 Jump Street film and are currently c0-directing The Lego Movie. This led some to wonder if the duo would have time to direct Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill again. It looks like they do.

In a recent interview, 21 Jump Street 2 producer Neal Moritz had this to say about the storyline for the sequel:

It leads off where we ended the last film and our guys are going to college… The relationship developed quite a bit in the first movie and now we’re kind of in the marriage phase between the two guys.  Now they’re actual partners, so they’re married – what happens once marriage starts?  In certain ways, it’s kind of like the Seven Year Itch of police buddy comedies.  What worked so well about the first one was – it was funny, yes, there was good action, yes – but really what worked more than anything was that there was great heart.  That’s the thing we’ve been working really hard on, just try and make sure that the heart of the first one is there for the second one.

On the original film:

21 Jump Street is a 2012 American action comedy film starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, scripted by Michael Bacall (from a story by both Hill and Bacall), and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Based on the 1987 television series of the same name by Stephen J. Cannell and Patrick Hasburgh, the film follows two police officers who are forced to relive high school when they are assigned to go undercover as high school students to prevent the outbreak of a new synthetic drug and arrest its supplier. It was released theatrically on March 16, 2012, and was both a critical and commercial success.
