Alex Garland‘s Annihilation (2018) movie trailer stars Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, and Tuva Novotny. Annihilation‘s plot synopsis: based on the first of the novel trilogy by Jeff VanderMeer, “A biologist (Natalie Portman) signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply.”
Here is the synopsis of the book Annihilation (spoilers):
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; the second expedition ended in mass suicide; the third expedition in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another. The members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within weeks, all had died of cancer. In Annihilation, the first volume of Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach trilogy, we join the twelfth expedition.
The group is made up of four women: an anthropologist; a surveyor; a psychologist, the de facto leader; and our narrator, a biologist. Their mission is to map the terrain, record all observations of their surroundings and of one another, and, above all, avoid being contaminated by Area X itself.
They arrive expecting the unexpected, and Area X delivers?they discover a massive topographic anomaly and life forms that surpass understanding but it’s the surprises that came across the border with them and the secrets the expedition members are keeping from one another that change everything
This trailer has the same positive feel as the first Arrival trailer when it was released i.e. the viewer wants to see and experience the film immediately. The story to Annihilation sounds fantastic, helped in large part by setting up a fascinating backstory (from the book plot synopsis) before the action in this film even takes place.
I really looking forward to the human response to alien force field and the environment within it that begins coming to life and altering its inhabitants. The teams that go into the force field to explore were as brave as the astronauts that explored the man-made worm hole in Interstellar.
After the success of Ex-Machina, Alex Garland must have had his choice of high-end scripts to make into films. He choice to write his own. He made a great choice.
Annihilation also stars Gina Rodriguez, Benedict Wong, Cosmo Jarvis, Honey Holmes, David Gyasi, Bern Collaço, Kumud Pant, Ed Manner, Crystal Clarke, and John Schwab.
