Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy join the cast of Len Wiseman‘s Total Recall (2012). Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bill Nighy join a Total Recall film that is actually a remake of a 1990 science fiction film of the same name that Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Michael Ironside, and Ronny Cox starred in. Total Recall is “based on the Philip K. Dick story ‘We Can Remember It for You Wholesale.’ Directed by Paul Verhoeven and written by Ronald Shusett, Dan O’Bannon, Jon Povill, and Gary Goldman, it won a Special Achievement Academy Award for its visual effects. The soundtrack composed by Jerry Goldsmith won the BMI Film Music Award.”

Kate Beckinsale will play Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell)’s wife Lori and Jessica Biel (nice photos of her here and here) will play Rachel, a “girl Quaid meets in his spy life”. Bill Nighy will be playing Quatto, the leader of the resistance. Bryan Cranston will be playing a undetermined villain. Bokeem Woodbine and Ethan Hawke are also listed as being in the film.

Because of Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel’s casting, I am really looking forward to the fight scenes in this film. The 2.0 version of this confrontation between the two of them should be good.

The 1990 Total Recall plot:

The plot concerns an apparently unsophisticated construction worker, Doug Quaid (Schwarzenegger), who is either a patient for a failed memory implant procedure or a freedom fighter from Mars relocated to Earth. He attempts to restore order and reverse the corrupt influence of commercial powers, all while faced with the possibility that none of these events are real and pursuing them could damage his brain.

The 2012 Total Recall plot:

this version of Total Recall, oddly, has nothing to do with Mars. Farrell is still Douglas Quaid but he’s a factory worker in a place called New Shanghai who believes he might have an alternative life as a spy. Bryan Cranston is Vilos Cohaagen, the leader of a rival state named Euromerica who is secretly planning to invade New Shanghai. Which side does Quaid actually work for? Well, there in lies the Total Recall.

Which of these plots sounds more interesting to you?

Total Recall will be released in US theaters on August 3. 2012. What do you think of Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel being cast in the film? Do you think this version we be better than the original film adaptation of Dick’s story?
