WONDER WOMAN: Adrianna Palicki cast in NBC’s David E. Kelley pilot

Adrianna Palicki, Wonder Woman

Adrianna Palicki has been cast as Wonder Woman / Diana Prince in NBC and David E. Kelley‘s Wonder Woman pilot. I watched Adrianna Palicki – repped by UTA and Anonymous Content – on three seasons of NBC’s Friday Night Lights and in less than stellar Legion. Her casting is a bit of a surprise. I was thinking they would pick someone that looked more like the comic book incarnation of Wonder Woman but Adrianna Palicki audition must have knocked everyone’s socks off.

The series pilot is a reinvention of the iconic DC Comics title in which Wonder Woman – a.k.a. Diana Prince – is a vigilante crime fighter in Los Angeles but also a successful corporate executive and a modern woman trying to balance all of the elements of her extraordinary life. Kelley and Bill D’Elia (“Boston Legal,” “The Practice”) are the executive producers. The pilot was written by Kelley and will be directed by Jeffrey Reiner (NBC’s “The Event”).  “Wonder Woman” is from David E. Kelley Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

I still think Kelley’s re-imagining of Wonder Woman is absurd, written about previously here: Wonder Woman: NBC picks up DC Comic TV Series Pilot. Kelley had those great Wonder Woman Antiquity story-lines of her mother and Diana at his disposal and doesn’t use them in lieu of an accessible, mass marketable, cosmopolitan Wonder Woman. Fantastic. So no ancient battles, no battlefields strewn with bodies, no armor-clad Amazons or sword play. Great. Who would want to watch something galvanizing like that? I still think they should have gone with Gina Garano for the role, though I doubt she even auditioned for the role. Tanit Phoenix did and we have her Woman Woman audition reel below. It gives you a good idea of what the dialogue in the Wonder Woman TV show will be like.

It turns out that none of the would-be actresses whom wanted the Wonder Woman role were even given a shot at showing their verbal or physical prowess for the role.

Palicki won the role of Wonder Woman, closely associated with Lynda Carter, who played Diana Prince in the 1970s series, in a decisive manner – she was the only actress invited to test for it. Wonder Woman reunites Palicki with the pilot’s director Jeff Reiner who previously served as director/co-executive producer on Friday Night Lights for the series’ early run on NBC.

If that is the case, I’m surprised that Minka Kelly, whom also starred on Friday Night Lights, didn’t get a nod for the coveted role. What do you think of Adrianna Palicki being cast as Wonder Woman?
