Blockbuster Horror Film OBSESSION Pushed for Comedy/Musical Honors at the Golden Globes

Blockbuster Horror Film OBSESSION Pushed for Comedy/Musical Honors at the Golden Globes

Obsession’s Campaign For Awards is No Laughing Matter

Inde Navarrette would score the ultimate victory if she defeated Julianne Moore in the musical/comedy category that Focus Features is campaigning Navarrette’s work in for Obsession.

Julianne Moore is currently the front runner for the Best Actress Oscar for her work in The Debut, but closely behind her is Inde Navarrette for her performance in Obsession. They’ll be competing in the same musical/comedy category at the Golden Globes if A24 puts Moore in that category, which Navarrette is confirmed to be running in.

This is not the first time a serious film has been labeled a comedy. It worked last year for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which scored Rose Byrne a Best Actress award in the comedy or musical category at the Golden Globes. Oscar may not nod for Navarrette, though, if she loses in that category at the next Globes. On the other hand, Madonna took the Best Actress Golden Globe for 1996’s Evita in the comedy/musical category while eventual Oscar winner Frances McDormand lost for her work in Fargo. That thinking suggests that even if Moore wins the Globe, Navarrette could theoretically win the Oscar if she secured the nomination.

Last year, Oscar cracked down on category fraud by snubbing Chase Infiniti, who was pushed as lead actress for One Battle After Another. It was clearly a supporting part. Oscar doesn’t like to play games anymore and by the studio, Focus Features, placing Obsession in the comedy category, the Academy may not take it as seriously as Focus Features intends it to be taken.

This is all very tricky because of the fact that actors like Paul Mescal (Hamnet) were snubbed by the Oscars last year because of something along the lines of category fraud. Mescal was clearly a lead and a great performance was snubbed since he was pushed for supporting actor. The big question mark here is whether or not the Academy will take Focus’ decision to call Obsession a comedy seriously. If A24 decided to push Mother Mary in the musical/comedy category, that would also make it harder for either Navarrette or Mother Mary star, Anne Hathaway, to defeat the formidable Julianne Moore at the Globes.

Right now, things are still looking up for Navarrette’s Oscar nomination chances, but a win in the Best Actress (Drama) category at the Globes could have helped Navarrette on the path to Academy Award glory. Pushing 2024’s The Substance as a musical/comedy hurt Demi Moore’s shot at the gold and her Oscar loss was a huge upset. We’ll see how things go when the Golden Globe nominations are officially announced in January.
