American Made Trailer starring Tom Cruise

Doug Liman‘s American Made (2017) movie trailer stars Tom Cruise, Caleb Landry Jones, Jesse Plemons, Sarah Wright, and Domhnall Gleeson. American Made’s plots synopsis: “American Made is based on the outrageous (and real) exploits of Barry Seal, a hustler and pilot unexpectedly recruited by the CIA to run one of the biggest covert operations in U.S. history.”

This film looks outrageous and all the right ways. The scene where Tom Cruise crash lands in a residential neighborhood and plays the child for his bike and his silence was hilarious. I was unfamiliar with Barry Seal‘s story until this trailer premiered but having watched both seasons of Netflix’s Narcos, I knew that pilots that flew planes like Barry Seal’s where very important to Pablo Escobar, especially at the beginning of his reign as a drug king pin.

On Barry Seal from Wikipedia:

Adler Berriman “Barry” Seal (July 16, 1939 – February 19, 1986) was an American smuggler of drugs and arms, aircraft pilot, dealer, and money launderer who flew flights for the Medellín Cartel.

He began flying at the age of 15. In 1955, aged 16, he received his airman certificate and joined the Civil Air Patrol (CAP).  As a commercial airline pilot, Seal flew for TWA from 1966 until 1974, when he was fired by the company.

Seal was employed by the Medellín Cartel as a pilot and drug smuggler. He transported numerous shipments of cocaine from Colombia to the United States and earned as much as $500,000 per flight.

After successful runs into his home base in Louisiana he moved operations to an infamous airport facility in Mena, Arkansas. There he bought, sold, and operated many planes. This includes the C-123 transport plane, supplied to him by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), that was famously used in the Nicaragua sting operation.

Seal certainly goes through a change, like Nicolas Cage in Lord of War, when cash starts rolling in because of all the jobs that he is doing. Does the CIA actually let him keep his pay from transporting drugs and weapons for criminals? Is he allowed to keep a portion of it?

What also isn’t given away is the big covert operation that Seal eventually conducts at the behest of the CIA.

American Made is produced by Doug Davison and Kim Roth from Quadrant Pictures, Brian Grazer from Imagine Entertainment, and Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson from Cross Creek Pictures.

American Made also stars Jayma Mays, Lola Kirke, Benito Martinez, Connor Trinneer, Jed Rees, William Mark McCullough, Juan Gaspard, April Billingsley, Steve Coulter, and Mike Pniewski.
