Black Canary and Diggle to Step Up After Oliver’s Supposed Death in Arrow. With Oliver falling to his death during the midseason finale, it remains to be seen if Oliver actually survived his fall. However, that won’t leave Starling City unprotected when Arrow returns on January 21.

Stephen Amell and the rest of the cast spoke at the Television Critics Association regarding the show’s future without it’s main star. “[He has] fallen,” Amell told Entertainment Weekly. “I can give fans hope that they like the show because of the actors in it but also because of the people that are creating it. They would do well to be patient and have faith in that team.”

Amell added that he knew about the outcome of the battle between Oliver and Ra’s al Ghul (Matt Nable) before filming season 3.

“I personally love when there’s adversity for the protagonist and we give other characters on the show the opportunity to…come more into leading roles,” he said. “If we don’t give other characters the opportunity to shoulder the load, then we give viewers nothing to attach them to. I’m excited for everyone’s opportunity.

One character in particular joining the fight will be Black Canary, which Katie Cassidy is excited about once she suits up. “I’ve been waiting for this to happen,” Cassidy said. “She goes from avenging her sister to honoring her sister to becoming her sister.”

There will be other vigilantes who will also be protecting Starling City when the show comes back. Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) will be one of them, but his path will be different than Team Arrow according to EP Marc Guggenheim.

One of the things that has always been part of the design of season 3 is that there would be more and more costumed characters populating Starling City. Oliver started off as just one man and he never envisioned all these other people being part of that plan. He thought he would be a solo act. Part of what he experienced this year was seeing the crusade grow beyond him.

Let’s not forget John Diggle (David Ramsey) and Roy Harper (Colton Haynes), who will continue to fight against crime during Oliver’s absence. Ramsey would also be donning the Arrow costume alongside Arsenal. “Blarrow returns!” he jokes. “Don’t call it a comeback.
