Bloodshot is Being Released Early on Digital HD Due to Coronavirus

Movie theaters and the films released into them have had many casualties due to Coronavirus (officially titled Covid-19). The latest victim is the comic book adaptation of Bloodshot starring Vin Diesel, Eiza González, Sam Heughan,Toby Kebbell, and Guy Pearce.

Released last weekend at the United States box office, the film saw a weak opening due to low theater attendance (they hope) and dwindling receipts ever since, below the norm for a star-led action film in the comic book genre.

The movie opened at the box office this past Friday to $9.1M and in the wake of the theater closings over the weekend has seen its box office fall from $2.1M on Sunday to $552K on Monday to $191K yesterday.

If Columbia Pictures had been clairvoyant or had been extremely careful, earning the ire of theater owners, Columbia would have pulled the film the week it was supposed to premiere because of the growing prevalence of Coronavirus. Now Columbia is preforming triage through an early Digital HD release to retrieve as much of the production and marketing budgets for the film as they can.

Bloodshot‘s production budget was $45 million and typically the marketing budget is half the production budget, so the marketing for Bloodshot cost $22.5 million. That brings the total that Columbia Pictures is out with Bloodshot to $67.5 million.

Patrons can buy Bloodshot on Digital HD for $19.99 on March 24, 2020.

Plot Synopsis

Bloodshot‘s plot synopsis: “Based on the bestselling comic book, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he’s an unstoppable force –stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too. Now, Ray doesn’t know what’s real and what’s not – but he’s on a mission to find out.”

Cast and crew

Dave Wilson‘s Bloodshot also stars Talulah Riley, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Siddharth Dhananjay, Lamorne Morris, Alex Hernandez, Maarten Römer, Tamer Burjaq, Patrick Kerton, Ryan Kruger, and Alex Anlos.
