The Bottom Line: May 11, 2018: I Was The LIFE OF THE PARTY Back In College

The Bottom Line: May 11, 2018

This week’s new releases include Life of the Party and Breaking In. Find out how they will all do in this week’s edition of The Bottom Line!

Box Office Top Five

The top spot at the box office last weekend went to Avengers: Infinity War, earning a staggering $114.7 million. Overboard had a solid showing in its first weekend, grossing $14.7 million. In third was A Quiet Place with $7.7 million. I Feel Pretty came in fourth with $5 million. Rounding out the top five was Rampage with $4.6 million, proving the solid word-of-mouth in its fourth weekend of release.

A Closer Look at Some of this Week’s Films.

Life Of The Party (PG-13) 105 mins.

Second place is looking as if it could be a tight race between the weekend’s two new wide releases, Life of the Party and Breaking In. Life of the Party is the latest raunch comedy from Melissa McCarthy. Releasing from Warner Bros., the film will try and offer a counter-program to Avengers. The films premise is after her husband abruptly asks for a divorce, a middle-aged mother returns to college in order to complete her degree. To me, this seems like a blatant Old School or the classic Back To School ripoff. In addition, I have never found McCarthy to be particularly funny, and the projects she chooses (besides Bridesmaids) are sub-par at best. Still, she is a draw and has demonstrated that with many hits on her resume. I predict that Life of the Party will take the second spot based on her track record at the box office.

Breaking In (PG-13) 88 mins.

Also releasing this week from Universal is the thriller Breaking In. Wit very little advertising, this film is most likely going to finish in third. The premise is a woman fights to protect her family during a home invasion. The cast is predominantly African-American, and over the past year these types of movies have found success at the box office (Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, Black Panther, Traffik to name a few). But negative reviews (29% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing), a lack of star power, and a poor marketing campaign are going to hold the film back from being a hit.

The Bottom Line

Avengers: Infinity War is going to be number one for the third weekend in a row. I predict that Life of the Party will land in second, and Breaking In will come in at third. The battle between fourth and fifth will be between Overboard and A Quiet Place. I will say that A Quiet Place will continue its impressive holds and grab fourth, with fifth going to Overboard.

Movies To Look Forward To:

Deadpool 2, Show Dogs, Book Club (May 18th)
