Box Office

Box Office: April 15-17, 2011: RIO, SCREAM 4, HOP

Rio

Comedy trumped blood. Rio premiered in the Number One spot at the box office this weekend with $40 Million. Scream 4 premiered in Second Place with $19.7 Million. With all the star power, marketing, and so forth that went into Scream 4, that has to be a very disappointing take to all concerned. For a no-name horror film that would be a good take but you have to figure that $19 doesn’t even cover the cost of all the actors’ salaries in Scream 4. I don’t think we will be seeing Scream 5. Hop was Third with $11.1 Million. Soul Surfer was Fourth with $7.4 Million. Hanna was Fifth with $7.3 Million. Arthur (2011), Insidious, Source Code, The Conspirator, and Your Highness rounded out the top ten respectively.

Rio (often promoted as Rio: The Movie) is a 2011 American 3D computer-animated film and Blue Sky Studios’s sixth feature film. The title refers to the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, in which the film is set. It is directed by Carlos Saldanha. The characters are voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, George Lopez, Jake T. Austin, Tracy Morgan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Mann, will.i.am, and Jamie Foxx.

Scream 4 (stylized as SCRE4M) is a 2011 American slasher film and the fourth installment in the Scream series. It was directed by Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, writer of Scream and Scream 2. It stars an ensemble cast of David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere. The plot involves Sidney Prescott returning to Woodsboro after ten years as part of her book tour. As soon as she arrives, Ghostface once again begins killing students from Woodsboro High, including her younger cousin’s friends. Prescott, Gale Weathers Riley, and Dewey Riley once again team up to stop the murders, but not before having to learn from a new generation the “new rules” of surviving horror films.

The Conspirator is a 2010 historical drama film directed by Robert Redford. It is the debut film of the American Film Company. The film tells the story of Mary Surratt, the only female co-conspirator charged in the Abraham Lincoln assassination and the first woman to be executed by the United States federal government. It stars Robin Wright, James McAvoy, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Jonathan Groff, Tom Wilkinson, Alexis Bledel, Kevin Kline, and Toby Kebbell.
