DOPE (2015) Red Band Movie Trailer 2: Teens in Love with the 80’s

Dope Red-Band Trailer

Dope Trailer 2Rick Famuyiwa‘s Dope (2015) red band movie trailer 2 stars Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey ClemonsBlake Anderson, and Zoe KravitzDope‘s plot synopsis: “Life changes for Malcolm, a geek who’s surviving life in a tough neighborhood, after a chance invitation to an underground party leads him and his friends into a Los Angeles adventure.

This movie looks awesome, and I can’t wait to see it. I’m a sucker for not only period pieces (which the 1980s and 1990s now are, holy shit) but coming of age stories, so when a film that is Hip-Hop inspired and takes place during my childhood fuses all of those things together perfectly (see The Wackness), I’m over the moon. Dope seems to be doing much of the same things – virginity, being cool, wanting to become the man you think you are, etc. We also get a look at A$AP Rocky‘s involvement in the film, as the cool, older dude you want to take you under his wing. It’s nice to see Tony Revolori play a guy his age and let loose a little, after having to play such a precise Wes Anderson character in The Grand Budapest Hotel.

The only work of Rick Famuyiwa I’ve seen is his 2002 film Brown Sugar, which was completely ok. It’s been a long time since then, and I feel as though Dope might be his most personal film to date. He’s not only directing, but has written this, as well. I’m sure we’ll see why once we see the film.

I grew up in Hamburg to a German father and Ecuadorian mother. Obsessive student of film, Hip-Hop, and stand-up comedy. I love the dark dreambox that is the cinema auditorium. I love mountains and the ocean, but am equally exhilarated by the jungle of the city. I hope to one day create something that hits someone in the brain with thunderous effect.
