EXTRACTION 2: The Original Film Becomes All-time Netflix Hit, Sequel Green-lit, Joe Russo Writing Script

Chris Hemsworth Extraction

Extraction All-time Netflix Hit and Sequel Green-lit

Extraction is the all-time biggest hit film on Netflix, soon becoming the most watched film ever on the international streaming service. Netflix has had a good run with its original productions. Last year, it was Bird Box (and the Bird Box Challenge that it spawned that social media companies quickly killed…before someone killed themselves). Now its Extraction.

Extraction original screenwriter, Joe Russo, has already closed a deal with Netflix to write the sequel to the action film.

It is unclear at this point whether or not director Sam Hargrave or actor Chris Hemsworth will return for the sequel film.

Both director and actor are in a fantastic position – with no sequel deal in place and the original film being a bonafide hit, both director and actor can ask for larger paychecks this time around.

Hemsworth had this to say about a possible sequel in Instagram:

Here are Extraction numbers in relation to other Netflix original films, including the aforementioned Bird Box:

Extraction eclipsed Spenser Confidential (85 million), 6 Underground (83 million), Bird Box (80 million), and the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston comedy Murder Mystery (73 million). Now, the Netflix metric changed and Extraction, Spenser Confidential and 6 Underground got views counted if homes watched for two minutes or more. The others were based on views of 70% or more.

The current Extraction 2 plan with Hemsworth seems to be that Extraction 2‘s producers will finish the script for the film, present it to Hemsworth, and then he will decide whether he wants to star in the film or not.

There is no word yet if any of the other surviving cast members will return for the film.
