Film Review: HOPE (2026): A Slow Buildup to the Most Exciting Finale at the Movies So Far This Year

Hope (2026) Film Review, a movie written and directed by Na Hong-jin and starring Hwang Jun-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton and Eum Moon-suk.

A new South Korean science-fiction film from writer/director Na Hong-jin, Hope, has all the markings of a “monster” hit. That’s because of an intense last forty-five minutes or so where our main characters are relentlessly pursued by a self-healing creature that takes no prisoners. This film has almost 2 hours that precede those scenes and the buildup to the conclusion is a bit hit-and-miss at times with some scenes that deliver a sucker-punch and others that meander aimlessly, trying to develop a plot that really doesn’t need so many explanations to be a successful movie.

Set in the village of Hope Harbor, we are introduced to a series of characters, some of whom help to make the action even more intense through their unpredictable actions. Hwang Jun-min portrays a policeman, Beom Seok, who must search for the reason why animals are being slaughtered in a gruesome fashion. He works alongside Sung Ae (Hoyeon), a female officer, also on the trail of the truth. Integrated into the film’s complicated storyline is the character of Sung Ki (Zo In-sung), who leads the hunt for the mysterious aliens found at the center of this hugely intriguing film.

There is a glimmer of “hope” for the ambitious people in the movie to try to defeat the creature(s) at the picture’s helm even though there seems to be little left in society worth living for after the alien invasion at the core of the picture. This movie carefully constructs and develops both the town it is set in and the intensity of the situation at hand while analyzing the fears and actions of the individual characters.

This movie begins to gather its characters on-screen as they try to get to the bottom of what is going on and why people and animals are ending up dead. These people try to figure out what is happening in front of them, and they slowly piece together the mysteries until the movie soon becomes a flat-out action picture, and all bets are off as to who, if anyone, will be left standing.

Michael Fassbender plays the face of the huge monster who appears near the climax of the picture. It’s an inspired choice to give the creature a human look underneath the truly monstrous details of the alien being. Alicia Vikander also plays another of the creatures as well and both of these movie stars give life to the aliens, which are living, breathing threats to human civilization as we know it.

Hope works best when it gets to the meat and potatoes of the movie. That Terminator 2: Judgment Day-like conclusion where our characters shoot off a piece of the alien, and it grows right back, is as intense and entertaining as chase sequences at the movies come these days. Terminator 2: Judgment Day was just re-released and it sort of serves as a prelude to the type of movie that Hope becomes, which is eventually a fast-paced thrill ride that will blow audiences right through the back of the theater.

All the lead characters are portrayed in a very distinct fashion by the performers at hand. There’s the defining nature of Beon Seok, which motivates the plot, and Sung Ae is the most heroic character in the proceedings as she seems to be the most relatable of the bunch. On the other end of the spectrum, there’s the would-be hero, Sung Ki, who makes every effort to try to make this nightmare go away. In a smaller role, Lee Sang-hee’s colonel character also intensifies the action as well.

That concluding series of scenes makes this picture work incredibly well as a crowd-pleaser. One character, in particular, is protecting himself from the alien for almost the entire chase sequence and then meets an unfair fate due to something other than the monster in an inspired twist of fate.

It takes great editing to make chase sequences as compelling as the ones in Hope, and the visual effects team should most certainly be remembered come Oscar time for the imaginative way this movie reaches its ambiguous concluding scenes, where we wonder if this could really be the end of these aliens once and for all.

Hope is a roller coaster ride of a movie. It builds tension superbly, even if the film could have trimmed some of the fat in the early scenes to make way for the audience to get to those exciting concluding moments sooner. This movie is relentless and doesn’t let up, especially in the dialogue scenes where characters bounce ideas and remarks off one another. Then, it just lets loose and steers itself into action film territory with a vengeance.

In the end, Hope is a monumental achievement in the science-fiction genre. One can complain there are some talky scenes, but the picture is focused and determined to make the audience get their money’s worth by the time the end credits come up. While the picture suffers early on from a basic structure that bounces around too much, the ending of the movie makes it all worthwhile, offering the viewer a monster that will keep audiences jumping out of their seats, “hoping” that the characters will escape its wrath. Hope is a fine film that keeps getting more intense as it moves along, ultimately unleashing a central monster that is certainly terrifying in its excesses.
