Film Review: YOU’RE CORDIALLY INVITED (2025): Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell Are Funny in a Rather Mediocre Comedy

You’re Cordially Invited (2025) Film Review, a movie written and directed by Nicholas Stoller and starring Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell, Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, Jimmy Tatro, Stony Blyden, Leanne Morgan, Rory Scovel, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Ramona Young, Jack McBrayer, Fortune Feimster, Celia Weston, Martha B. Knighton, Bobby Moynihan, Ava Hill, Wyatt Russell and Vinny Thomas.

Nicholas Stoller’s new comedy, You’re Cordially Invited, is a goofy screwball attempt at a rom com without most of the requisite on-screen romance. This is the type of love story where our two potential lovers mostly bicker and argue all the way through the movie and don’t realize they’re falling for each other until about the time the end credits come up. That wouldn’t be a problem if everything around them that was happening wasn’t so plain silly. Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are the potential romantic partners despite a minor age difference of about 10 years. I know age is just a number but it’s to Witherspoon’s credit that she doesn’t look her age at all whereas Ferrell looks just a year or two younger than his actual age.

This film opens with the story of Jim (Ferrell) and his daughter Jenni (the always fabulous Geraldine Viswanathan). Jenni, who has a tight-knit bond with her dad, is about to get married to her boyfriend. Jim wants her to have the best ceremony he could possibly give her. We find out what Jim’s job is later in the movie and money is not an issue. What is an issue is the fact that the venue he tries to book isn’t recorded accurately. Why not? Well, the older woman making the reservations at the venue drops dead before she can write the appointment in. Enter Margot (Witherspoon) who actually books the said venue for her younger sister, Neve (Meredith Hagner)’s wedding. Neve is also secretly pregnant which makes for some complications within the story line.

What happens when both sets of families arrive for the wedding services? A lot. Margot gets right into the venue and has her credit card on file, but Jim has to fight tooth and nail to prove he really booked the place. Margot turns out to be kind and lets Jim (and his entourage) share the space with her with pretty wild results that are mildly amusing but more frustrating than anything else. Things become a total disaster and people who think that could be funny may be entertained by the hijinks that ensue.

Viswanathan is very charming in almost every role she plays even if a little of her antics go a long way in this picture. She’s the character who suffers the most because she ends up with a black eye when Margot accidentally bangs her arm into her and though, at one point, Jenni’s wedding has the upper hand, all hell breaks loose which leads to a chaotic series of events. Of course, Ferrell’s character is the fun one and Witherspoon’s is the uptight one and their personalities will balance each other out by the time the ending arrives so that they may have potential as a real couple.

Witherspoon makes a welcome return to the type of comedy that suits her talents. She plays her role straight and has a great time conveying the character’s quirks. Ferrell is a laugh-a-minute in this role as he and Witherspoon outdo each other with their profanities and try to solidify their wedding plans for their respective loved ones.

You’re Cordially Invited has heart but not enough of it. This movie is more interested in slapstick humor and goes as far as bringing an alligator into the mix at one point just when you think things can’t get any more insane. Everyone ends up getting wet at some point. This film is very humorous at times but goes on way past its welcome, unfortunately.

There is another bright spot in the supporting cast. Keyla Monterroso Mejia once again proves she is a winning up-and-comer with some really funny line delivery. She was in the recent box-office hit, Just One of them Days and, again, provides another likable turn for viewers. Geraldine Viswanathan can also do no wrong even if her character grows weary by the time the concluding scenes arrive.

Ferrell and Witherspoon have cute chemistry in a screwball sort of way. Their characters complement each other in unique ways and the situations that they are immersed in are moderately funny. This movie’s major problem is that, at nearly two hours, there’s not enough plot to pad out the extended running time so what we’re left with feels like funny improvisation that may float your boat for a little while, but the picture eventually runs out of steam towards the end. Luckily, they’ve tacked on Ferrell and Witherspoon dancing together during the end credits which adds some charm to the movie if you make it all the way until the end.
